1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled? 2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? 3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. 4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? 5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
1. I struggled with creating skin tone with the water color. Another technique that I struggled with was controlling the amount of ink on the calligraphy pen which I used to outline parts of my piece. However through these difficulties I was able to research on a method that combined water with chalk pastel. This allowed me to "save" my piece through the addition of leaves and color saturation. 2. I had drawn inspiration from other artists by watching videos of different painting techniques such as flicking the paint brush. I had also drawn inspiration from the chalk pastel and water tutorial as I found it was very useful in outlining different features while still allowing it to have a graceful look. 3. Initially in my piece the green was not included however after finishing the red section I felt the message of change and growth was not fully developed. I also didn't intend for the red side to have such an interesting value and texture to it however I needed to cover up a horrid mistake and this idea grew into one that highlighted my piece even more. 4. If I were to do this piece again I would have not dolloped the faces with such a heavy shade of skin tone. Because of this I was not able to highlight the person's face and give it more definition. 5. This piece connects with my previous pieces as they all follow this common theme of "identity". In this piece I really wanted to acknowledge my mother who is an incredibly impactful person in my life. Not only this but I felt it was also important to acknowledge her past through her marriage and how she had grown, changed and developed. In general I feel like any loved one could create an enormous impact into one's life. A quote from korean poet, Jung Hyun-jong, depicts this best when it says: "Having someone walk into your life is actually a very astonishing thing. That's because they bring their past, present and their future with them. That's because, someone's whole life comes along with him. The heart is fragile, therefore, it might have been broken. That heart is coming too."
